It's the concept. The close something gets to appearing human, the more appealing it is, until it gets so close it's uncanny, and then the reaction is utter revulsion.
I very much saw that happen when I got out of Spirits Within, people didn't like it because the people looked very human but noticeably not so. Also it reminds me a lot of the relationships we see in the various Ghost in the Shell series.
Even the most disturbing looking robots don't have uncontrolled children running around screaming though, point in their favor.

It is a very intriguing concept, and I think I can agree with it. Almost a more-human-than-human kind of reaction.
